Statue of Vladimir Lenin in front of the Transnistrian parliament in Tiraspol, Transnistria, Moldova
Hello, I’m Daniel, a freelance journalist covering democratic movements and elections around the world.
Myanmar
I recently spent a few days in the border city of Mae Sot, where one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world is happening along the Thai-Myanmar border due to a brutal civil war caused by a 2021 military coup.
Some internally displaced refugees are forced to live in shacks made from trash, tarps, and bamboo. In Thailand, many others live in crowded sheds on nearby commercial properties.
Myanmar citizens resort to selling cigarettes, liquor, and fish jerky to people across the Thai border.
I’m proud to say that I’m the first American and second Westerner to visit the camp of the Seventh Brigade of the People’s Defense Force (PDF) along the Thai-Myanmar border. They are fighting for a return to a federal, democratic system of government.
