Split was home to Diocletian, who ruled as the Roman Emperor from 284 - 305. His enormous palace still stands and is a fantastic piece of history to soak in. One of the most precious displays is a 3,500-year-old black granite sphynx that was gifted to him by the Egyptians after he sent troops to help quell a rebellion there. 12 Sphinxes were given to Diocletian, but all except one were destroyed sometime between the 5th and 6th centuries by invading Christians.
Park šuma Marjan is on the west side of the city, within walking distance. There are many walking trails, viewpoints, a few really old churches, and the 15th-century monk hermitage.
